How to Make An Envelope From A Brown Paper Grocery Bag

Here is how to make an envelope from a brown paper grocery bag that you can use for shipping almost anything! Making these homemade shipping envelopes is easy and best of all cheap!

I seem to always have a growing pile of brown paper bags from the grocery store that I just can't bring myself to get rid of. Do you have the same problem? So I hang onto them and they just keep piling up.

Recently I found myself short on shipping materials, mainly large envelopes. As orders for face masks in my Etsy shop started increasing, my need for more shipping envelopes skyrocketed! I started to panic a little until I remembered the growing pile of brown paper bags and I wondered if I now had a solution to fix both problems.

I got to work creating a DIY envelope I could use to ship out my face masks (or anything else). Guess what? It worked! I could even alter the size of the homemade brown bag envelopes to fit whatever size I needed.

How To Make A Shipping Envelope From A Brown Paper Grocery Bag

Today I'm going to show you how to make an envelope from a brown paper grocery bag. Ready? Let's get started.

Materials List:
Brown paper grocery bag (in fairly good condition)
Scissors
Shipping / Packing tape
Ruler

Step 1
Lay the folded brown paper bag with the bag's bottom flap face up flat on a solid surface. Fold the bottom flap back matching it up with the underside bag bottom (see picture). Cut across the bag to remove the bottom of the bag completely. You should now have a large bag tube.

Step 2
Cut the paper bag "tube" open so that you now have one long continuous rectangle. My cut open bag measures 38" long! (See picture above)

Step 3
This step will vary depending on how big of an envelope you need to make. I am making an envelope that when finished, measures just over 6 1/2" to 7" wide by the height of the bag (minus the bottom) which in my case measured 13 1/2" tall.

Cut a 14 to 14 1/2" long section of the paper bag. You should now have a 14" x 13 1/2" section of paper bag.

Step 4
Pick one of the longer sides and make a 1/2" fold along the edge. Then along the bottom edge make a 1/2" fold. The two folded sides should intersect.

Next, fold over the long side of the bag in half matching up side edges.

Step 5
Using your packing tape securely tape the bottom edge of the envelope and then tape along the side.

It is optional but I like to take a small piece of tape and from the inside of the bag tape down the folded side and bottom flaps that you make in step 4 above. This just makes sure that whatever you are sending in the envelope won't get stuck to the tape that you used along the bottom and side edges.

Step 6
Insert whatever you are shipping into your envelope, fold over the top edge and tape it securely closed.

That's it! Can you believe how simple this whole process was? Not only is it easy to do but the cost to make your own envelope is so small! I buy my bags at Aldi for about 7 cents each and I can make 2-3 envelopes with one bag. The cost of tape is the only other cost which is quite inexpensive.

I hope this tutorial was useful to you! Please let me know your thoughts in the comment section. Thanks!

8 Tips to Help You Plan The Ultimate Family Staycation

Family staycations are the new way to vacation! Depending on the season of life you and your family are in, an out of state vacation might seem like more work than it is worth.  Why not consider a family staycation instead?

Does the thought of cramming your family into a tiny hotel room for a week of vacation seem more like torture than restful? Planning a kid-friendly vacation that can accommodate nap times, picky eaters, bedtime routines, hot sticky weather, crabby family members all on a tight budget can be a near impossible task.

As parents we want to give our children the gift of a fun-filled vacation but if an out-of-town vacation isn't in the budget and seems way too overwhelming why not consider a staycation instead!

This post contains affiliate links which means if you click on a link and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. For more information please see my disclaimer page. Thanks!

8 Tips to Help Plan The Ultimate Family Staycation

A family staycation embraces all the fun and restfulness of a vacation from the comforts of your own home. Check out our list of ways to make your staycation the best family vacation ever!

1. Create Family Staycation Guidelines

As a family spend some time discussing your expectations for your staycation. Everyone has different opinions of what "relaxing" is so make sure to discuss what expectations are before the staycation so everyone can enjoy their at-home vacation. For example, what chores must get done during the week and which ones can be skipped? Will it be a social-media free week? Will you allow friends or family to visit during your staycation?

2. Come Up With A Plan

click HERE for free printable planner

You might not be booking hotels, rental cars or flights but having a plan in place will help this staycation feel like a real vacation. What local attractions, restaurants, activities or nature preserves do you want to visit?

Depending on the season of your staycation look for opportunities to try something new like a great new sledding spot in the winter or a backyard bonfire.

If you don't have a plan it will be really easy to slip back into your regular routine which won't make this time feel like a true vacation. No need to create a plan of your own from scratch - use this great FREE printable staycation planner from the mint.com blog instead.

3. Create A Budget

click HERE for free staycation budget planner

If the budget is tight having a plan in place before your staycation begins can help you keep your spending in order. Planning out what places or activities your family is going to do before hand gives you time to find deals, coupons and even free events everyone will enjoy without blowing your budget.

Research which museums and events are free or what times and days they offer discounts.  Download a FREE staycation budget planner from mint.com blog today!

4. Have A Meal Plan

Don't forget to plan which meals you will be eating out and which ones you will eat at home. The cost of eating out can be more expensive than you think so stick to your budget and enjoy preparing a meal or two together as a family at home. Keep it simple and put your crockpot or instant pot to work for you so the meal is ready when everyone is hungry!

Use this amazing meal planner from Sunny Day Family that includes everything you need to plan out a week of recipes for snacks and meals so you can stay within your budget!

5. Let Loose A Little

It's a vacation right! Why not get a little crazy and kick the rules to the side for a few days? All day pajama party, face painting party in the kitchen or spa day in the bathroom isn't something you do everyday but on a vacation the sky's the limit. When you are on vacation everything is a little more relaxed and fun so make sure to let down your hair a little and enjoy your staycation!

6. Pick Your Family Splurge Item

There is always something on every vacation that everyone looks forward to so why not have one special "splurge" item on your staycation too! It doesn't have to be extravagant to make it special. A walk on the beach collecting seashells or tickets to a local sport event or even a special family dinner can all be considered a special splurge. Remember vacations are about making great family memories, so make some great ones!

7.  Plan Some Local Day Trips

Your staycation doesn't have to all be done in the comforts of your own home. There are plenty of local attractions around that are within a tank of gas if you look for them. Plan a few day trips to places you love or haven't visited before, pack a cooler and hit the road for the day. The best part is you get to sleep in your own bed each night!

8. Vacation Attitude

Remember this is a vacation so make sure your attitude is set to vacation mode! As a parent it is easy to reply to a quick email from work or return a phone call to your boss, but remember you wouldn't be doing this if you were out of state lying on the beach somewhere would you? So don't do it on your staycation either! Commit to a vacation and to relaxing and truly unplug from the daily grind. Your family will thank you!

Easy No-Bake Oatmeal Peanut Butter Energy Snack Bites

Our family is always on the go which is why I am constantly on the lookout for homemade, healthy, easy-to-make, budget-friendly snacks to bring along with us.

Even better is when I have all of the ingredients on hand in my cupboard!

This post contains affiliate links which means if you click on a link and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. For more information please read my Disclaimer page. Thanks!

These easy no-bake oatmeal peanut butter energy bites (whew....long name for a little snack!) meet all of the above requirements. I can't believe how easy they are to make!

And guess what....my kids love them too!! Win - win.

I know there are a lot of great energy bites or energy ball recipes out there but this one has a special secret ingredient the other recipes don't have. It is a total flavor-boosting game changer, my friends. I came up with it by chance when I was just a bit short-handed on one of the ingredients and I was blown away at the difference it made.

Want to know what my secret ingredient is.......flavored instant oatmeal! Surprised?

My favorite is maple & brown sugar instant oatmeal. All you need is one small packet added with the rest of the ingredients and the flavor just explodes!

This is the perfect recipe to let your kids help make too! We do a lot of baking and cooking for school since there is always a lot of math, science, and reading involved.

Go grab a large mixing bowl, a spatula, or wooden spoon, and let's get mixing shall we?

Delicious No-Bake Oatmeal Peanut Butter Energy Bites

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups oatmeal
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/3 cup maple syrup or honey

Optional add-ins:
1/4 cup chopped almonds, pecans or peanuts
1/8 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup dried cranberries, cherries, or raisins

Make This Recipe:

1. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt the peanut butter for 30 seconds so it is easy to mix.

2. In a large bowl mix all the remaining ingredients including the melted peanut butter together.

3. Scoop out a heaping tablespoon of the mixture and roll it into a ball. (To keep the mixture from sticking to your hands, lightly wet you hands with water). Repeat with the remaining mixture making about 16-20 energy balls depending on size.

4. Place the energy balls onto a parchment lined baking sheet and put them in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.

Store the peanut butter snack bites in a sealed tupperware container in the fridge. Trust me though, they won't last long!

This yummy snack is perfect for on-the-go families! Why fill up those little tummies with junk food when they can eat a few energy bites, feel full and you can know that they are getting a healthy snack. These little bites even satisfy your sweet tooth cravings too!

12 Delicious Thanksgiving Leftover Recipes Your Family Will Love

Thanksgiving is a cooking marathon! You get up early, pop the turkey in the oven, chop, slice, stir, mash and prep the side dishes, set the table and greet your guests. Exhausting isn't it? But as you look around your table at all who are gathered to celebrate a day set aside for reflecting on what we have to be thankful for, it makes the work totally worth it.

While the post-feast turkey coma sets in on you and your guests don't forget about the leftovers!

Thanksgiving food leftovers are almost as good as the original meal. That's is why I try to make a little extra of the side dishes so I can box up a meal for each of my guests to take home with them.

Not only will your guests be thrilled to take home some leftovers but your overflowing fridge will be grateful for the extra space!

Boxing Up The Leftovers

I LOVE these affordable, reusable, microwavable, and freezer-safe plastic containers to pack up leftovers for my guests. There is plenty of room to pack a sizable leftover meal in them and the lid snaps on securely so no worry about it popping off on their trip home.

Oh, and don't forget to prepare a separate to-go container for leftover desserts too! Nobody wants their gravy mixing with their pumpkin pie!

Once all the leftovers are boxed up and packed into the fridge it can be so hard to tell what is in each container. Who wants to spend time pulling out container after container from the fridge, popping open each lid only to find that the one you opened isn't the leftover dressing you're craving.

I've got the perfect solution to this problem - customizable printable labels!

Print off several sheets of these FREE labels from Wikibuy.com and fill them out as you pack up the leftovers. Not only are the labels super helpful but they add a little extra elegance to your guest's to-go containers too.

20 Of The Most Useful Items I Bought On Amazon And Would Buy Again

Do you like shopping on Amazon as much as I do? As a busy homeschooling mom, Amazon has made shopping and life so much easier.

Don't forget to PIN for later

The smile on my face matches the smiley-faced box that arrives on my doorstep because I know I saved myself a little time and frustration not having to drive all over town shopping for whatever it was I needed.

I participate in the Amazon affiliate program. If you click on a link below and make a purchase I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. For more information please see my disclaimer page. Thanks.

Amazon has made the price of convenience so incredibly reasonable! I have found some great products over the years that I love and some that I continue to buy over and over again.

I thought I'd share with you some of the best purchases I have ever made on Amazon in the hopes that you might find something you will like too. Here are my recommendations:

The 20 Most Useful Items I Purchased on Amazon.

Shall we get started? I hope you find these products as helpful as I do.

Aegend Swim Goggles:

We have an in ground pool and spend most summer days swimming for hours on end. Because of this, we have to have good quality, affordable swim goggles that fit a variety of sizes from adult to child. I've tried tons of different swim goggle brands from super cheap to super expensive. These Aegend swim goggles are my kids favorite! The lenses are anti-fog, UV protection, and do not leak. They also come in a variety of colors and lens options (tinted, mirror or clear). As a bonus each pair comes in a protective hard case that you can use to store your goggles in when you aren't swimming.

If you were to ask my kids what they love about these goggles they would say the strap because they don't have to pull the strap over their heads (which always pulls their hair). Instead they put them on by unhooking the clip at the back of the strap, pressing the goggles to their face over their eyes then connecting the strap behind their head.

Flybar My First Foam Pogo Jumper for Kids

I love toys that promote active kids and this one doesn't disappoint. This fun and safe pogo stick can be used indoors, is made from durable foam and a bungee jumper and can support up to 250lbs (just in case daddy wants to give it a little try!!). Winter's in our state can be rough so finding an active toy the kids can use inside is perfect for us!

I recently sent this to my 4 year old niece for her birthday and she LOVED it! Guess who is her favorite aunt now!!

Shotbow 10 Assorted Color Premium Metallic Marker Pens

My oldest daughter loves to journal and has recently started her own bullet journal. Not only does she love organization, planning and doodling but when she can add color she will. These metallic paint pens add such a cool pop of color to her bullet journal pages! They are perfect for journaling, crafting and can be used on a variety of different surfaces too.

Fire HD 10 Tablet

Since we are in the car a lot driving from activity to activity it has been so convenient for my oldest children to use their Fire HD 10 to access and read books online, work on homework and listen to their favorite music (with headphones!). We love this case too that is super functional and keeps their tablets protected.

Batiste Dry Shampoo

If you are like me you probably don't have time every day to wash, dry and style your hair that is why I rely on a good quality dry shampoo to give my hair an extra day or two between shampooing. I have tried many different dry shampoo brands, none of which "wowed" me...until I tried Batiste. my hair wasn't oily but instead it felt clean and was super easy to style and manage throughout the day. The hint of color was a game changer as well since it helped cover up my grays a little while helping my brown locks shine!

Neoprene Dumbbell Pairs and Sets with Stand

We have a small area in our basement we use as a workout area. Since space is at a premium this little compact weight set fits into the space easily and provides us with a the right weights for toning muscles. I love to use these right after completing a programmed session on my Bowflex Max Trainer because my muscles are warmed up and ready to feel more burn!

Speaking of the Bowflex Max Trainer, if you are looking for a compact full body exercise machine that anyone can use, no matter your current physical state this is it!! My six year old can use it just as easily as I can. It is smaller than a treadmill or elliptical and doesn't require a lot of impact to you knees.

10X Magnifying Makeup Vanity Mirror With Lights

Since I'm at the age of needing reading glasses on a regular basis I found putting on my makeup was beginning to be a struggle. I just couldn't see! This mirror saved my face, literally. The light along with the magnification are super helpful as I try to apply my makeup. It has also made eyebrow maintenance so much easier too!

I have two daughters, both who have super thick, long hair. There isn't enough detangling spray or conditioner that will help them comb out their hair without a lot of pain after swimming or even after a shower. The Wet Brush has become their number one favorite hair tool! Not only can they easily comb out big tangles but it doesn't pull or tear their hair. We love this brush so much that I even wrote a complete product review of the Wet Brush - check it out here.

Inflatable Air Mattress

I bought several of these a year ago when our family was about to take our first tent camping trip together. They were so comfortable! I never even felt bumps, rocks or sticks that may have been poking through the bottom of our tent. I made sure to buy an air mattress that came with a battery operated air pump too so I knew I could inflate it even if there wasn't any electrical hook up or power. My kids love using the air mattress when they have friends over for sleepovers because they are easy to inflate and comfortable to sleep on. We've even taken one or two with us if we are traveling and staying in a hotel since we know they are comfortable and pretty much a good night sleep for anyone who sleeps on it.

Spiral Hair Ties

We go through hair accessories so quickly with three of us using hair ties regularly. These corded hair ties are our favorite because they stretch easily, hold hair in desired style well and work well in different thicknesses of hair. The best part is they don't leave your hair with a pony tail bump when you take your hair down. They make great gifts -  I always put a pack or two in my girls' Christmas stockings each year.

My youngest son LOVES to wear socks! Many times he is so busy playing he will run outside to grab a toy or talk to a friend and forget to put shoes on which wears out his socks so quickly! I find myself ordering new socks for him often. I love that Amazon has my history saved so all I have to do is re-order the pairs he knows and loves (without the holes!). I actually buy socks and undershirts for my boys and my husband on Amazon regularly and I don't even have to make a special trip to the store for these basics.

If I don't write everything down in my planner I know I will forget something, usually something important! I love this planner and the flexibility it offers me so I can keep life and all of our busy events, appointments and celebrations all in one place. I don't like using electronic planners, call me old fashioned, that's OK! I use what works and for me that is a good ole' paper bound planner.

KIPOZI 1875W Hair Dryer

This was the first time I purchased an ionic blow dryer and let me tell you I absolutely love it. I notice a huge difference every time I use this awesome blow dryer. My hair is silkier and not dried out anymore. It comes with a concentrator and a diffuser and offers 2 speeds and 3 different heat settings. Also, it is not noisy which is a big must have for me since I don't want to wake up my kids because I am blow drying my hair.

Wireless Headphones

I purchased these Bose SoundLink Around Ear Wireless Headphones last year for my husband. I never thought he would be so excited over a pair of headphones but boy was I wrong! He loves these wireless headphones and uses them all of the time. His favorite way to relax and chill out after work is to sit in his favorite chair, headphones on listening to music or a sermon. These headphones cancel out any noise (which our house has plenty of!) so he can listen without distractions.

My oldest daughter loves to exercise and workout and does so on a regular basis. We got this for her so she could track her workouts as well as her nutrition. The Versa special edition also offers additional features such as 300+ song play list and Fitbit pay which we opted not to get for our teen since she uses her phone for music all the time. She loves the functionality of this smartwatch and we love that she has become more accountable for her nutrition.

Wall Mounted Acrylic Fish Bowl

This is just the coolest fish tank ever! We actually have two, one for each of our kids' rooms. I was always afraid that if the kids had a fish tank sitting on top of their dresser or night stand it would get knocked over. This tank solved that problem since it hangs on the wall. Not only is it a fish tank it is like having a living piece of art on the wall too. It is simple to take care of and our goldfish have done quite well in this tank.

So we actually don't have a dog but one of our neighbors just got a new puppy and has hired my oldest to come over three times a week during the lunch hour to walk their puppy. We got these waste bags and dispenser so that her job of walking the puppy would be easy and hassle free. The little dispenser just clips to the leash so my daughter can easily access the waste bag quickly as they make a pit stop along the walk. All responsible pet owners should carry their own waste bags so that unwanted yard bombs aren't left in your neighbor's yards for them to clean up.

Kaasage Eyelash Curler with Advanced Silicone Pressure Pad

This little eyelash curling tool is wonderful! It fits all eye shapes and creates the perfect curl. My daughters and I have all used it and I can truly say that it works on all different eye shapes. The silicone pads are gentle and don't pull or rip out lashes. Cleans up quickly too!

StankStix Deodorizer for Shoes and Smelly Sports Equipment

There are days when I open up our shoe closet and can feel the hair melting off of my face! Have you ever experienced this? The smell from the shoes is overpowering and stinky! These Stank Stix have been a lifesaver (or shoe saver!), eliminating the odors and keeping the closet much more scent friendly.

If you don't have an Amazon Prime account yet Amazon offers a free 30 day trial so you can give it a test drive before committing to paying the annual membership fee. This is what we did before committing and we found that there were tons of items we could get through Amazon shipped free to our house that saved us time and money. I hope you will give it a try!

There you have it, my top 20 most useful items I bought on Amazon. I hope that by reading this you have a better idea of some of the unique and useful items you can find on Amazon. Amazon is so big that sometimes it can be a little overwhelming trying to find the things you want without getting sidetracked!
