Valentine's Day DIY Fabric Hearts

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to show your love and creativity with a handmade touch. Fabric Hearts

These fabric hearts are a great way to add a festive touch to your Valentine’s Day table setting. Not only are they charming and cute, but they’re customizable to your own decor and will brighten up your space. Plus, this craft is beginner-friendly, so even if you’re not a seasoned crafter, you can create your own quickly.

Materials You’ll Need:

• Home Decor Fabric (in your choice of red, pink, white, or other Valentine’s Day colors)
• Scissors or Pinking Shears (I love these pinking shears)
• Hot glue & hot glue gun
• Cardboard (recycle an Amazon box!)
• Paper & Pencil
• Template or stencil for heart shape (optional, but can help with precision)
• Wooden skewers
• Power drill & drill bit (the same size diameter as the wood skewer)
• Wood (I used reclaimed wood cut to the size I wanted / or use small 2" x 2" blocks)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Cut Out Heart Shape

Draw or trace a heart shape on the cardboard using a pen. You can use a template or stencil to help you cut out perfect hearts.  Once your design is drawn, cut out the cardboard heart shape carefully with your scissors.

2. Cut Out Fabric Hearts

Next, select the color of fabrics you want to use for your hearts. Red, pink, or white are classic Valentine’s Day colors, but feel free to mix it up with other shades, like purple or metallics.

Use the heart template on the fabric by tracing the shape on the wrong side of the fabric and cutting out the heart with the pinking shears (or regular scissors). Cut out two fabric hearts per one cardboard heart. 

3. Glue the Pieces Together

Now, it's time to glue the heart pieces together. Apply a thin layer of hot glue along the edge of the cardboard heart. Place the one piece of the fabric on top of the cardboard and press gently to adhere. Make sure the edges are aligned. Flip the cardboard heart over and apply a line of glue down the center of the cardboard. Press the wooden skewer into the hot glue and hold it firmly until the glue hardens. 

Apply another layer of hot glue along the edge of the cardboard heart then place the second piece of fabric right side facing up over the cardboard, making sure it is center and the wooden skewer is sandwiched in the middle. 

4. Drill Holes (2 Options)

Option #1 Use a power drill to drill holes in the center of a 2" x 2" block of wood. Insert the wood skewer into the drilled hole.

Option #2 Drill evenly spaced holes into a longer piece of wood. Insert the wood skewers into the drilled holes.

Tips for Customization:

• Personalized Messages: Add a ribbon bow or twine bow around the "stems" of the wooden skewers.
• Play with Patterns: Mix up the shapes and sizes of your hearts for a more whimsical, varied look. You could also try different patterns like polka dots, stripes, or chevrons to match your Valentine’s Day décor.
• Use Eco-Friendly Felt: If you want to make an environmentally conscious choice, look for wool or recycled felt fabric, which is both sustainable and durable.

Simple Valentine's Day Cupid's Arrow Craft

Valentine's Day always puts me in the mood to craft! Traditionally Valentine's Day is meant to be a day to express your love to your significant other so why not get in the mood with a simple love-themed craft?

By the time February rolls around most of us are feeling a strong case of cabin fever and need a little boost to tide us over until spring arrives. Crafting can do just that - give you a winter blah boost!

Today I'm sharing a really cute DIY Valentine's Day Cupid's Arrow craft. They can be used as table decorations, mounted on a canvas for wall art, or given as a candy-free gift. 

This craft is so super simple and would be fun to do with kids too. 

Cupid's Arrow Supply List:

Felt sheets (any color!)

hot glue & glue gun

8"-10" long skinny stick or twig

ribbon or baker's twine

scissors

Tutorial Instructions:

1. From the felt cut the following: 

• cut two -  2" x  2" x 2" triangle for the arrowhead
• cut two - 4" x 2" rectangles for the arrow fletching (these are the feather-like tails on an arrow)

2. Place one arrow piece face side down and then add a bead of hot glue down the middle of the triangle. Quickly place one end of the stick on the hot glue making sure the stick doesn't poke past the tip of the triangle. Then run another bead of hot glue along the top edge of the stick above the section that is glued to the bottom triangle. Place the second triangle on top of the stick, right side up making sure it is lined up with the bottom triangle. Put a dab of hot glue on the inside of each of the triangle points and press closed. 

3. Cut a triangle shape out of the long end of each rectangular piece of felt. On the other side of each rectangle felt piece cut off the top two corner edges. See the picture below for an example:

4. Place one piece of fletching face down and then run a bead of glue down the center. Quickly press the other end of the stick onto the glue. Run a bead of hot glue along the top side of the stick and put the second piece of felt fletching on top of the stick matching up the bottom piece of felt. Spread open the top and bottom edges of the felt along and run a bead of glue along the stick pressing the felt closed around the stick. Do this on both sides. 

5. Cut small upward-facing slits along both sides of the fletching to give it a feather-like appearance.

6. (optional) Tie a piece of ribbon or baker's twine around the stick just above the fletching.

 

Congratulations you are all done! Here are some great ideas to style your new Valentine Cupid Arrows:

• stick them face-up/face-down into a large glass vase and display it on your mantel or as a centerpiece

• tie a long piece of twine to each arrow and hang them in a window or along your mantel like a banner

• hot glue each arrow in alternating patterns to a canvas for a piece of wall art

• attach an arrow to the top of a gift instead of a bow

Once your paintings are dry all you need to do is fold them in half and cut out a heart shape. We used postcard size cardstock paper and glued the hearts to the center. On the back of the postcards we wrote our current Bible memory verse, Isaiah 43:4a, which fit perfectly for Valentine's Day!

 These lovely Valentine's Day post cards can be given to loved ones, classmates and friends. We chose to make enough to give one to every resident at a local assisted living & memory care facility. With Valentine's Day just around the corner it seems fitting to start working on some holiday-themed crafts, doesn't it? I love scouring Pinterest for inspiration, tutorials, and holiday-themed ideas.

Recently I came across a bunch of heart-themed quilt blocks and I fell in love! The variety, the colors, and the simplicity (or complexity) of these cute quilt blocks were so inspiring!

Top 5 Cutest Heart-Shaped Quilt Blocks

#1 Box of Chocolates 

Isn't this block so lovely! It is so pretty that I actually didn't notice the chocolate - well, OK yes I did but the quilt block is still amazing. The Box of Chocolate quilt block is from the Temecula Quilt Company and currently, they offer the pattern for this block free! To download the pattern click HERE. 

#2 Quilty Hearts Quilt Pattern

This pattern from Quilty Heart looks similar to the Box of Chocolates (above) but what I love is that the colorful hearts are bigger in size and a little more angular. Oh, and don't you just love the black-and-white version! How inspiring! You could make this in various colors depending on who you are making this for. Also, wouldn't this look great as a table runner or mini wall quilt?  

#3 Color Of My Heart

The pops of color in this quilt from The Crafty Quilter really caught my eye! I just loved looking at each colorful square or half-square triangle. The variety of prints all blend together to make this beautiful patchwork heart mini quilt. The pattern for this heart quilt can be found HERE.

#4 Heart Shaped String Quilt (from paper)

I found this image on a site for recycled paper crafts but I thought this would make an awesome string quilt. Don't you agree? All you need to do is cut out a heart shape from copy paper and start sewing strips of fabric to it just like a string quilt. Have you ever made a string (or strip) quilt block? It is a great scrap-busting kind of project. I love this tutorial from A Quilting Life and I recommend you use this tutorial to make your own string quilt blocks. 

#5  I Heart You

  This little beauty is from the Pen and Paper Patterns blog including a tutorial and pattern! Wow, what an adorable heart block! The word bubbles gives this block such an interesting twist. 

So as you can see there are a ton of great inspiring heart block quilts to be found on Pinterest! 

 

And The Winner Is?

Are you wondering what pattern I attempted? I won't keep you waiting any longer! Here is the heart-shaped mini-wall quilt I ended up making:

I chose to make a Color My Heart quilt block based on the pattern from The Crafty Quilter. I love how it turned out! 

I actually quilted the inside of the heart following the shape of a heart to make it look like a bunch of hearts inside the big fabric quilted heart. You have to look closely to see the quilting lines in the picture.

This pattern was a great use of all the various scraps I have in my bin. I like that the colors all blend together to make a cute heart and I loved how The Crafty Quilter's block (above) used a black and white border so I copied that theme for my wall quilt.

How To Make Heart Shaped Crayons

My youngest tells me "I love you mommy" multiple times throughout the day. I swear I will never tire of hearing him tell me this. I've even started making him promise that when he is a teenager he has to keep telling me he loves me. I'm sure the days ahead, full of teenage angst will come but today I'm going to bathe myself in hearing his sweet little voice tell me he loves me.

When my husband and I were dating we decided that for our first Valentine's Day together we would make each other something. We were just poor college kids so we needed to be a little creative with our very limited budgets. Honestly this Valentine's Day was and still is my favorite one! You are probably wondering why, but first let me give you a little background to my husband and why his gift to me was so precious and meaningful. 

He can't cook or bake or do anything in the kitchen aside from make himself a bowl of cereal or brew some coffee. His kitchen skills stop there! I'm not even exaggerating - at all. Now that you know him a little better his gift to me will show you how much he was trying to communicate his love or me. 

Back to the homemade gift.

Walmart

He went to the store, bought a heart-shaped cake pan and a boxed cake mix and a tub of frosting along with a bag of cinnamon red hot hearts. This sweet guy made his very first cake EVER, frosted it and put one tiny little red-hot cinnamon candy heart in the middle and gave this to me as a gift. (I'm pretty sure he ate the entire bag of red-hots while the cake was baking!) I was blown away. This small gift spoke volumes to me since he was willing to step out of his comfort zone and into a very strange new world to him - the kitchen, all for me! What a memorable Valentine's Day for sure. 

DIY Heart Shaped Crayons 💗

Fast forward to the present day with 4 kids and the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday around the corner and I'm ready to start crafting some Valentine's Day themed crafts with them.

One of my favorite Valentine's Day crafts is making heart shaped crayons! If your craft cupboard looks like mine I'm sure you have a tub or box of broken crayons you just can't part with. When you have a little one (or many little ones) crayons seem to be breaking right and left but the best part is they still work!

To make these cool heart shaped crayons all you have to do is pull out your tub of crayons pieces, remove any paper labels, put the chunks into molds like a cupcake tin pop them into a 250 degree oven for 15-20 minutes and let the heat of the oven melt the pieces into one solid mixed color mold.

My kids loved making these! My girls liked to make ones that were of the same or complimentary color palette whereas my boys preferred to mix dark colored crayons with light crayons. It didn't really matter what colors they put together because all of the newly shaped crayons turned out awesome.

Walmart

Once the molded crayon is dry and no longer hot just pop them out of the mold and start coloring. The mix of colors is fun to see since they all streak together when you use your new crayon.

We gave our heart shaped crayons away as Valentine's Day gifts to our friends at Bible study and they were a BIG hit! At first the kids couldn't believe it was a crayon but once they started using them they had a blast coloring with them.

Since I had the supplies (broken crayons & heart shaped cupcake tin) on hand this project cost me $0!! Don't you just love projects like this? I certainly do.

Hobby Lobby

I've really gotten a lot of use out of these heart shaped cupcake pans too. Not only have I made cupcakes and rice krispie treats in them but I also used the mold to make seed bombs! I've put together a great tutorial in this post so you can make some too. They are super easy and also make great gifts for Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day - Take it or Leave it?

I'm kind of a "luke warm" Valentine enthusiast. I love doing special projects with my kids for the holiday but when it comes to the full blown - dinner, cards, gifts, and on and on, well I'm just not that into it.

Unless there is chocolate involved! My dad has spoiled my two younger sisters and I since we were little girls. Every year, even when we lived far away, a heart shaped box of Russell Stovers chocolates showed up at our door or was hand delivered. Yum!

Before the flavor of each piece was posted on the lid of the heart shaped box or a little paper insert diagram of the flavors it was eat at your own risk. Heaven forbid you bit into one of the flavors that were AWFUL! As a kid we used to poke our fingers through the bottom of each piece to find out what kind of candy we were going to eat. Then began the fun game of "trade your yucky chocolate for someone else's". My middle sister loved the coconut and my baby sister liked the caramels. Me, I loved the nougat, caramel and the chewy pink one. 

So friends, Happy Valentine's Day, I guess. Enjoy some chocolate!

10 DIY Valentine Cards For Kids

Hello, friends! I've been searching through Pinterest looking for some creative Valentine ideas for my kids to make this year. Even though they are home schooled and we don't need to crank out 30+ Valentine's Day cards for classmates we still love to make them and give them to family and friends.
